Dementia is a condition that affects a person’s thinking, reasoning, memory, and more. It is essential to understand some signs of dementia and its types. This will help you understand which kind of service is needed for your loved one, whether it is memory care assisted living, or anything else. So, in this blog, you will learn about the common types of dementia, signs to identify if your senior has it, and more. Let’s get started.

What are the Common Types of Dementia?

Dementia is a general term for describing reduced functions of parts of the brain that are responsible for memory, thinking, reasoning, etc. Have a look at the common types of dementia for a better understanding.

  • Frontotemporal dementia: This type of dementia mainly impacts the front and the sides of the brain. It is important to pay attention to the 7 stages of frontotemporal dementia because each stage leads to different problems.
  • Vascular dementia: Vascular dementia has symptoms like difficulty in concentration, planning, balance, movement , changes in mood, etc.
  • Lewy body dementia: In lewy body dementia, your senior may have sleep issues, visual hallucinations, changing levels of alertness, confusion, and more.
  • Mixed dementia: Mixed dementia is a combination of two or more types of dementia at the same time. Its symptoms include problems related to reasoning, memory, movement , etc.

What are Some Signs to Identify That  Your Loved One has Dementia?

Studies have shown that around 7.4 million seniors in America have dementia today.  It is essential to be aware of the signs of dementia so you can get the best treatment for your loved one. Lets discuss these signs in detail.

1) Memory Issues

Asking for the same information multiple times, forgetting basic details like names of close ones, address, etc., is a serious sign when things like this happen on a daily basis. Further, any difficulty in memorizing new information may also be an indicator of dementia.

2) Language Issues

If your loved one frequently faces challenges related to language, then it may be a major sign of dementia. This includes incidents like using incorrect words, forgetting easy words. In such cases, seniors may not like to join a conversation because they may have difficulty understanding what others are saying.

3) Routine Tasks Have Become Difficult

People with dementia also have difficulty when it comes to performing routine tasks like driving, maintaining hygiene, taking medications, etc. These tasks may seem simple for a regular person, but they can be a huge challenge for seniors with dementia.

4) Behavioral Change

The behavior of your loved one may change due to dementia. This can be in the form of frequent mood swings, anxiety, confusion, etc. This is because dementia primarily affects an individual’s mental functions, such as memory, thinking, and reasoning.

5) Visual and Spatial Issues

Many seniors with dementia may also face many visual and spatial issues, such as falling on stairs or curbs, difficulty in reaching for some objects, etc. If all these incidents happen on a daily basis, then their safety could also be at risk.

6) Judgment Issues

Dementia patients also have judgment issues quite frequently, like becoming a victim of scams, not being able to properly manage their finances, etc. This is common in dementia patients because it also has an impact on the reasoning ability of a person.

Where Can You Get the Right Care for Your Loved One?

One of the best gifts for people with dementia is providing them with the right care.  This is possible through senior health care services, which may vary according to the difficulty faced by an older adult. There are four types of services, namely assisted living facility , memory care, respite care, and hospice care.

In assisted living services, assistance is provided to your loved one at all times so as to boost their independence. A memory care community offers specialized services for those with memory problems. Respite care services offer the main caregiver of the patient a chance for rest by providing care to the senior in their absence. Hospice care is for terminally ill patients, in which they receive skilled nursing care.

Beyond these 4, many senior health care communities also offer hospice respite care, in which hospice and respite care services are combined.

Final Thoughts

Dementia is a condition that comes in many types, like frontotemporal dementia, Lewy body dementia, vascular dementia, mixed dementia, etc. It affects seniors, causing problems with memory, language, behavior, visual and spatial awareness, judgment, and more. All of this can impact them on a regular basis, making it difficult to perform daily tasks.

Therefore, it becomes important to pay attention to these signs so they can be managed as early as possible. Make sure to understand these signs well to decide which type of service is best for your loved one.
